Written by Enid Blyton. It is part of the Barney series.
The Main characters are Snubby (A cousin who’s family died so he travels with his black spaniel Loony around to his more distant relatives), Roger, Diana (Brothers and sisters) Barney (A friend with a monkey called miranda they met who grew up in a circus and his mother died so he travels from one place to another looking for work and his father) Uncle Richard, Aunt Susan, Dummy (very strong but not very smart) Miss Glump(the owner of the inn) the performance folk and Miss Pepper (Aunt Susan’s old governess).
The book starts of where Snubby, Roger, Diana and Miss Pepper go of on a holiday to Rubadub a town by the sea with a whirlpool and a secret submarine nearby because Uncle Richard and Aunt Susan go to America on a holiday. They stay at a hotel called Three men in a Tub and meet Dummy. They get a call from Barney and he says he will hitch-hike over to Rubadub. When Barney meets Dummy he thinks he knows him from somewhere and finds out that he used to be a tightrope walker in the circus his mother had been in when he fell of and got brain damage. Barney gets a job with the performance group playing there as the magicians assistant and gets word that he might be able to meet his father and is able to go meet him. He goes out to the rock next to the whirlpool and meets a man from the secret submarine base and delivers a parcel to the magician and goes back to speak to his father and the man says that he isn’t his father and Barney looks over to the magician but had already rowed of and was having a fight with someone in the boat. Barney swims over to see what is happening and Dummy falls out of the boat. Barney takes him back to the rock and remembers a myth about someone crawling through the blowhole during low tide and tries it. Barney and dummy only just get through alive and walk back to the inn. The police arrest the magician and Barney gives up hope looking for his father. Snubby gets the surname of Barney’s father and Miss Pepper remembers someone who might know him. Later Barney, Snubby, Roger, Diana and Miss Pepper are on the beach when Barney’s father turns up and Barney finds out he has cousins, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunties and uncles.
I give this book 5/5 stars because I really like Enid Blyton mysteries especially the Barney since they are always in different places, and have a good plot and have a lot bigger range of characters but are different to the police crime mysteries.
I give this book 5/5 stars
